The generous spirit of the first anonymous donation, made in memory of Tara and Kendra Brickner in 1997, is the core of Gifts from Heaven. Throughout the year, Gifts from Heaven collects donations that fund the annual delivery of holiday gift baskets to families in need.

Gifts from Heaven receives about 150 to 200 referrals each year from area police departments, churches, and domestic abuse or aid agencies. Families are asked to note those items they need most. Then Cheryl Brickner and a crew of volunteers purchase toiletries, clothing, towels, blankets—whatever that family needs—including food or heating assistance gift cards. Every child receives a wrapped toy and the families’ items are placed in a basket. The police officers then donate their time and make the deliveries.

To date, Gifts from Heaven has provided for 2,500 children and 660 families.
