In 1997, the Brickner family suffered the tragic loss of two of their three daughters—Tara, age 8 and Kendra, age 7—in a fatal car accident. The outpouring of community support helped the family through the most difficult time in their lives. One anonymous donation changed their lives—and became a way to honor their daughters while assisting others in the community.
An anonymous gentleman, in response to the Brickners’ loss, donated toys for underprivileged families to the Wausau Police Department in memory of Tara and Kendra. When others heard of this generous gift, other donations poured in—and Gifts from Heaven was founded.
Gifts from Heaven is a non-profit organization that provides toys and essentials for families in Wisconsin during the holiday season, as well as funds throughout the year for families in crisis. Gifts from Heaven is supported by tax-deductible donations from communities throughout Wisconsin, as well as the annual Brickner Charity Golf Scramble. To date, Gifts from Heaven has provided for 2,500 children and 660 families in Wisconsin.
To assist underprivileged families, community members, police departments and area agencies submit the names of families to Gifts from Heaven. Families are asked to submit applications that determine their level of need. From the applications, approximately 50 to 75 are chosen to receive holiday gift baskets stocked with essential items—such as toiletries, clothing, towels, blankets, food or heating assistance gift cards—as well as a wrapped toy for each child. The baskets are delivered by area police officers. In addition, Gifts from Heaven also donates funds, throughout the year, to families with ailing children or adults, or those who have suffered great losses, such as a house fire.
“What we give people is very tangible, and yet it’s very intangible. It’s more than those items they need—it’s a sense that the community cares. And I’ve found that the central Wisconsin community is very genuine. People give just to give—with no expectation of return. It’s that, I think, that has made the most difference in our lives.” Cheryl Brickner.
